MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan — An Iwakuni-based Marine was held by Tokyo Metropolitan Police after attempting to “scale a fence” near the German embassy in Tokyo’s Roppongi district, base officials confirmed Wednesday morning.

The unidentified female corporal — assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12 — was placed in protective custody at about 2 a.m. Friday, Marine Aircraft Group 12 spokesman Capt. Marco Valenzuela told Stars and Stripes on Wednesday morning.

She was not arrested and has returned to MCAS Iwakuni, he said.

The Marine was on a trip sponsored by the base and attempted the climb after a night of drinking, according to a report Tuesday by the online news site Tokyo Reporter.
