AFN Salutes Women Serving Their Country

Thousands of American women serve their country overseas.  In March, the American Forces Network (AFN) dedicates television programming to these hard-working patriots.  

“We’re saluting women in the military, serving in public or diplomatic offices and those performing community service worldwide by featuring programming with strong, courageous women. We will air a movie about Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Malala Yousafzai, the premiere of Suffragette and hours of other popular programming,” said Maj. Rosy Poulos, the Director of the AFN Broadcast Center.  “We also want to acknowledge and salute women making history right now. We want viewers to recognize the women they most admire and respect with a post or a tweet by using the hashtag #Salute2Women.”  

AFN premieres four movies in March in honor of women of great strength and character, all at 7 p.m. CET/JKT:  He Named Me Malala, Mar. 5; Still Alice, Mar. 12;  Woman in Gold, Mar. 17; and Suffragette, Mar. 26.   

He Named Me Malala is the story of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who at the age of 15, was targeted by the Taliban and shot after championing education for girls.  Still Alice won an Oscar for former DoDDs student and actress Julianne Moore, calling attention to Alzheimer’s disease. Woman in Gold, is the true story of a woman who, after 60 years, tries to reclaim family possessions seized by the Nazis.  Suffragette tells the story of the women’s rights movement in early 20th-century Britain.    

Every Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m. CET/JKT in March, AFN|spectrum encores special episodes of Quantico, Blindspot, Madame Secretary, CSI Cyber, Law&Order SVU, Mysteries of Laura, Marvel’s Agent Carter and Supergirl depicting dramatic roles of women in public service.

Sundays at 4 p.m. CET/JKT, AFN|prime airs specials featuring women of distinction and public service:  On Mar. 6, Independent Lens: Wilhemina’s War, the story of a family dealing with AIDS’ on Mar. 13,  American Masters: Althea, the biography of Althea Gibson, the first African American to play and win at Wimbledon; on Mar. 20,  Independent Lens: A Ballerina’s Tale, the story of  Misty Copeland rising to become the first African American Principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater;  and, on Mar. 27, Ethel – Ethel Kennedy’s life and an insider’s view into a political dynasty.

AFN|family’s Together Time celebrates kids news pioneer Linda Ellerbee Saturdays in March with two-hour weekly blocks of Nick News episodes at 4 p.m. CET/JKT.  Sunday Together Time  features movies with young, strong and righteous female roles. Tune in Sundays at 4 p.m. for the animated features Frozen, Brave, Epic and Home.
