Japan Writers Conference

TOKYO (Sept. 1, 2020) – The Japan Writers Conference has announced a lineup of about 30 presentations by published writers in a variety of fields, including best-selling U.S. novelists Barry Eisler and Naomi Hirahara, for its 14th annual event on Oct. 10-11.

Due to the pandemic, this year’s conference will be held entirely online, with details to be announced at http://japanwritersconference.org/. As always, it will be a free event open to all who are interested in the art, craft and business of writing.

Eisler, the author of thrillers featuring John Rain and Livia Lone, will give a presentation on how to write “a killer opening,” while Edgar-winning mystery novelist Hirahara will discuss how she developed her popular sleuth Mas Arai. Japan-based novelists such as Charles Kowalski, Holly Thompson, Michael Pronko, Steve Redford, Mike Guest and Lea O’Harra are also set to participate in the conference, as is China-based Irish novelist David Brennan.

Iain Maloney and Karen Hill Anton will discuss writing their memoirs of life in Japan. Suzanne Kamata will examine how writers depict people with disabilities. Screenwriter Steven Wolfson will explain how to develop a premise. There will also be panel discussions on making pitches to editors and on what to expect from enrolling in an MFA program.

The conference is a wonderful chance to hear and interact with a plethora of poets, including Michael Dylan Welsh, Christopher Simons, Jane Joritz-Nakagawa, Warren Decker, Gregory Dunne, Philip Rowland, Michael Frazier, David Gilbey, Yoko Danno and Goro Takano. And there’s much more in store.

Details on this year’s event can be found at http://www.japanwritersconference.org
