Nostalgic café reminiscing back to Tokyo in the 1920s
Taking a trip to Yasukuni Shrine? With the famous shrine and many office and school buildings packed in the Kudan district, there are relatively few eateries nearby.
Thankfully, situated only a minute from the shrine is Tokyo Chubo, which offers a tasty lunch at a reasonable price.
The eatery has a classic black wooden façade, reminiscent of a stylish Tokyo café in the 1920s, which singles it out among modern office buildings on the street.
Although its menu is in Japanese, pictures of dishes displayed in a showcase at the entrance gives you an idea of what is offered. Popular dishes at the shop include omurice (Japanese omelet rice) for 690 yen ($7) and chicken cutlet set for 730 yen. Prices of its lunch sets ranged from 690 to 1,000 yen, offering a great inexpensive lunch.
Salarymen and students often wait in line, as it is a popular restaurant during lunchtime. In fact, when I visited it around 2 p.m., all the tables were still occupied. Fortunately, I found a space in the counter and I was able to enjoy my lunch without waiting.
The interior is a cozy, relaxing and somewhat nostalgic atmosphere where a lot of Art Nouveau-style drawings and black-and-white landscape photos of Tokyo in those days hung on the wall.
Following a staffer’s recommendation, I ordered the daily lunch set, which was deep-fried minced meat cutlet and croquet, salad, rice and soup for 780 yen.
The homemade deep-fried minced meat was really juicy and had a rich flavor of butter and various spices. The surface of cutlet was very crispy, and along with dark sauce, it matched perfectly with the rice and miso soup. Free refills of rice and soup are offered as well.
Adult beverages, such as a glass of red or white wine (200 yen) or a jug of beer (400 yen), are offered at reasonable prices. You can drop by the shop on your way home to have a drink or enjoy a late supper as it is open until 10 p.m.
Drop by Tokyo Chubo when you visit Yasukuni Shrine. The classical, nostalgic shop and its tasty dishes will perfect your visit to the historical attraction.
