Enjoy tasty Cajun-style cuisine, wine near Yokosuka

Located near Kanazawa Bunko Station of the Keikyu Line, if you are at Yokosuka Naval Base, the rapid express from Yokosuka Chuo Station gets you there in just two stops.
A Yokohama native, owner Raizo Oda, who cooked at various restaurants in the U.S. and Mexico for years, opened the restaurant three years ago. The place has a warm, dimly lit concrete-wall interior with countless bottles of liquors on wooden shelves.
Oda’s menu includes various Cajun dishes, ranging from oil sardine and plum pasta, marinated salmon, cream cheese canapé to tomato cream risotto with shrimp and mushrooms. The wine selections are carefully selected by Oda, who looks for tasty wines from France, Spain, America and Australia to pair with his homemade dishes.
Most of the dishes at Razio range from 600 – 1300 yen ($5-12) with bottles of wine from around 3,000 – 5,000 yen ($27-48).
Oda never forgets to add his own input and customize dishes for each customer. When I ordered a Spanish red wine, Torres Sangret de Toro Garmacha, Oda cooked a Japanese stewed beef pizza with dried red pepper and sautéed duck with black pepper based on my taste preferences.
“My concern, always, is to offer the best-matching dishes to the tastes of each customer,” Oda said.
The pizza was tasty and matched well with my wine. Or I should say that the wine perfected the uniquely combined taste of traditional Japanese and spicy Cajun flavors.
The sautéed duck was superb, as well. The fresh tomato and onion along with mustard and lemon enhanced the taste of the crispy and bitter sautéed duck. I enjoyed the sour, sweet, salty and bitter tastes all in the dish at once, and it went well with the wine.
Oda and his staff help to make the environment a friendly and inviting one. The staffers made sure to talk to every customer and see them off as they left the shop.
One day, when I was leaving, Oda came out, made a deep bow and said “Let’s enjoy the rest of our life.” “With over 50 years of trial and error, I feel I can now do things much better,” he added.
I smiled at him replying, “So do I.”
For myself, Razio was a trial and success – one I’d certainly recommend to someone seeking a charming atmosphere and tasty soul dishes. The place is popular, so I’d also recommend making a reservation in advance.
