American-style food at affordable prices
Historic Kamakura offers a plethora of top-notch Japanese restaurants, but sometimes nothing hits the spot like a good ol’ American-style burger.
Home to the Great Buddha statue that dates to 1252, this popular tourist destination draws Japanese and foreign visitors alike year-round. The blocks are lined with great restaurants, many of which offer high-quality Japanese dishes that aren’t always wallet-friendly.
Rooftops, an American-style burger joint near Kamakura Station, offers great, familiar food at affordable prices. The ingredients separate this spot from the competition. It serves chunky, high-quality beef — not minced meat like many other places — and the vegetable toppings are crisp and fresh.
Most importantly, Rooftops’ top-notch buns aren’t dried out or flaky. While the meat is the primary ingredient, bad toppings or a subpar bun can ruin a burger experience.
Rooftops’ lunch set, which consists of a small burger, salad, potatoes and a drink, costs 1,100 yen (about $11). Customers can pay extra to upgrade to a bigger burger, though they might spend the rest of the day in a food coma.
Rooftops’ burgers come in a variety of options, ranging from teriyaki, mushroom sauce, chili bean and more. It also offers a special children’s lunch set.
Aside from the food, Rooftops’ biggest draw is its view. The sixth-floor eatery is designed to resemble someone’s home, giving the place a nice, cozy atmosphere. Half of the dining area offers a great view of the Komachi Dori, one of Kamakura’s main shopping thoroughfares, obviously inspiring the name of the restaurant.
Komachi Dori is where most of the tourists do their shopping, which makes Rooftops a great place to simply relax, enjoy a beer and take in the view.
Rooftops probably isn’t the best option for those who want to experience local culture. But for Americans looking to take a time-out from Japanese food and sample something familiar, it’s a good place to start.
