Navy hospital corpsmen celebrated their 117th birthday at the Club Iwakuni Ballroom aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, during the 117th Hospital Corpsman Ball June 13, 2015. On June 17, 1898, Congress approved a bill witch created the naval rates of hospital apprentice, hospital apprentice first class and hospital steward after seeing the need for a group of trained medical professionals in the field of battle, officially bringing the hospital corpsman to life. Service members gathered for the event to celebrate and pay tribute to the sacrifices corpsmen have made over the years.
