Salmon is becoming very popular again around Misawa! Not only in the supermarkets, but also in particular rivers or fish ports. Rokkasho-mura, located in the north, and Oirase-cho, located in the south, have magnificent salmon-catching events!

Why is salmon-catching (sake tsukami-dori) is so popular around here? Actually, the Oirase River in Oirase-cho is famous for its salmon run-up, as somewhere around 100,000 salmon run-up every year. The record-event is even registered in the Guinness Book of World Records!

At the events, there are also many shows to enjoy, including singing, dancing and, of course, plenty of food to taste.

Because of its size, the locals proudly call this event the “No.1 Salmon-Catching Festival in Japan.”

The events are usually held in November, so you’ll need weather-appropriate clothing. Also, water-repellent clothes, towels, boots and gloves are recommended. A second set of clothes for children is also a good idea if you plan on experiencing this local fun. Make sure you enjoy catching the salmon but don’t catch a cold!
