Army identifies Green Beret killed in Helmand
WASHINGTON — The Army identified Green Beret Staff Sgt. Matthew V. Thompson, 28, as the special forces soldier killed Tuesday when the Afghan patrol that he was advising hit an improvised explosive device.
Thompson, a decorated soldier based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, was assigned to Company A, 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), the Army said in a news release.
Thompson and the Afghan unit that he was advising were on foot patrol when the attack occurred. A second U.S. servicemember and six Afghan soldiers were injured.
Lt. Col. Kevin M. Trujillo, commander of Special Operations Task Force -- Afghanistan, called Thompson “an exceptional Green Beret.”
Thompson was “a cherished teammate and devoted husband. His service in Afghanistan and Iraq speak to his level of dedication, courage, and commitment to something greater than himself,” Trujillo said.
