Yokohama's Chinatown has a ton of restaurants, but only one Setsuen

Chinatown is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Yokohama City, and as one of the largest Chinatowns in Asia, it offers many restaurants and food stands to get a great bite to eat. Picking a place to have a nice lunch or dinner can be overwhelming in such a place, but Setsuei has you covered.

The restaurant is near Kanteibyo, a colorful Chinese temple with a beautiful gate in the district center.

My wife and I stopped in for the delicious Beijing-style Chinese dishes for lunch one day. When we pushed into a colorful glass door, we saw the casual and cozy dining room big enough for 20 guests.

TV and magazine-famous for its “suupu chaahan,” or fried rice soup, the restaurant is usually busy, but we arrived right after the lunch rush and were able to enjoy our meal at a large table without any problems.

Though we didn’t order the suupu chaahan, we did go for some simple stir-fried rice with shrimp for 840 yen (about $7.50), stir-fried noodles with various vegetables, pork and seafood (840 yen) and fried dumplings (630 yen).

We ordered on a more conservative side, thinking we should have a smaller meal since it was later in the day, but were quickly surprised with the servings. Each dish was enough for two people and we were glad we hadn’t ordered more because we might not have been able to finish them all.

Our food was delicious and the flavors exquisite, very different from the usual oily, salty Chinese food we’ve had at some other places. The stir-fried rice had tender shrimp in mild-flavored crispy rice. The stir-fried noodles had a firm yet springy texture, which soaked up all of the flavorful shrimp and squid broth. The large dumplings were juicy and meaty, and really went well with our stir-fried rice and noodles.

We chose well for our first visit to Setsuen. We left satisfied and impressed with the range of flavors we sampled. We are definitely ready for our next visit to try their signature dish and other delicacies this restaurant has to offer.
