Mike's Tex-Mex restaurant near Yokota AB offers taste of home

A 10-minute walk from Fussa Station, the eye-catching yellow wall with red letters of “Mike’s Tex-Mex” invited me to sample homemade tex-mex foods. Interior was also consolidated in bright yellow with Mexican flag, Sombrero and shelfs filled with countless bottles of Mexican beers, tequilas and mescals, creating cozy yet full of liveliness that a typical tex-mex restaurant must offer.

Saori Hashimoto, a restaurant staffer boasted of its American, open, friendly atmosphere. Actually, 60 to 70 percent of customers are Americans from Yokota Base, according to Hashimoto.

“I have never met a bad American customer since I started working here three years ago,” said the staffer who handmakes every dish.

I ordered special lunch set of quesadilla and mini taco salad for 840 yen ($7).

Against my expectation that all the tex-mex dishes must be extremely hot, the food was rather mild but really tasty with rich and fresh flavors, along with well-seasoned meat. The chips and taco shells were hot, fresh and crispy, as they were fried to order. In brief, they tasted like home dishes.

Hashimoto let me sample complementary “Margarita of Fresh Fruits.” The sherbet of combined fresh fruits juice was really refreshing and went well with spicy tex-mex dishes.
