Yokota, Iwakuni to open USO centers
For years, the residents on Command Fleet Activities Yokosuka and Command Fleet Sasebo have been familiar with seeing three little letters around their base - USO. They know the USO is part of the community core and offers free programs like Free Food Fridays and Tot Tuesdays to both single and unaccompanied service members and families alike. They know the USO provides a safe, home-like environment to relax, talk with friends and family, study, watch a movie or simply take a nap at any time of the day.
Soon, two new communities will get to experience the same welcoming USO atmosphere. USMC Air Station Iwakuni and Yokota Air Base will both feature new USO centers and operations this year.
The USMC Air Station Iwakuni USO center will be located at the AMC Terminal in building 727. The new center offers a convenient respite for those working or living on or near the flight line, as well as transient passengers waiting for their flight. Equipped with a state-of-the-art theater room with comfortable chairs, a gaming room with the newest consoles and video games, CAC-enabled computers for service members to access official websites and free Wi-Fi. The Iwakuni USO will become an integral part of the community, supporting our military with morale to transition programs.
USO Yokota is in a temporary location at the recreation room of building 2080 until our permeant home in the Yujo Community Center is completed in the fall. Building 2080 is located across from the Yokota Library and just a few meters from the base Exchange. This location will offer airmen and families the opportunity to access free WI-FI, play video games, use CAC-enabled computers, watch TV, and enjoy free coffee and popcorn. USO Yokota has already established themselves in the community with local pool parties and Frozen parties for the little princes and princesses on base.
Both centers will provide free events for community members, both inside the centers and throughout the base. Programs will include: Special Delivery, a fun and exciting baby shower for expecting and new mothers, hosted by Heidi Murkoff, author of “What To Expect When Expecting,” as well as Hire Heroes USA transition workshops, which offer free one-on-one resume building for both active duty and their spouses.
The grand opening for Yokota Air Base USO center will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Fri. Jan. 27. Iwakuni’s grand opening will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tues. Jan. 31. All are invited to attend and be the first to experience our new locations. For more information on USO on mainland Japan, please visit our website at http://japan.uso.org.
