The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) began its 2014 active duty fund drive at Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka March 3.

NMCRS is a private, non-profit, volunteer organization that provides financial assistance and other aid to U.S. Navy and Marine Corps service members, their eligible spouses and survivors in need via donated funds.

“We’re here to help,” said Sandy Adams, NMCRS FLEACT, Yokosuka fund drive coordinator. “The money we receive from Sailors during these fundraisers goes back to them in times of need. The more we can raise, the more we can give back.”

Coordinators spoke with volunteer representatives from tenant commands in Yokosuka and discussed fund raising techniques and the overall goals of the fund drive.

“Our goal is 100 percent contact in each of your commands, and our overall goal is to raise more than last year’s total of $382,403,” said Chief Culinary Specialist Van Vergara, FLEACT, Yokosuka command NMCRS coordinator.

“Some ideas for fund raising that have been used in the past include command-sponsored events like bake sales, car washes and pie-in-the face events,” said Adams. “All these are good, fun ways to get commands involved in donating to NMCRS.”

NMCRS Yokosuka provided more than $485,000 in aid in 2013 for 743 individual cases.

“We want more than anything to be able to continue helping our Sailors, Marines and retirees in need, and in order to do that, we need donations,” said Adams. “Every dollar helps.”

The FLEACT, Yokosuka NMCRS fund drive will take place from March 3 to March 31.
