Yokosuka to host roller derby events Dec. 7-8
YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE - Visiting Roller Derby skaters from Okinawa, Yokota, Zama and Yokosuka will all be getting together this on the weekend of the Dec. 7-8 for the following events:
* Friday night- A free showing of a derby related film at the Hockey rink outside Purdy Gym starts at 1700
* Saturday – A mash up bout begins at 1600 in the Bubble gym in Ikego with all local and visiting skaters who would like to skate. This is akin to a pick up scrimmage game in a game of football. Sides are chosen at the gym and skaters skate for the team in a pick up bout. Referees are there for safety purposes.
* Saturday – at 1745 following the mash up bout, the main event, a WFTDA sanctioned Roller Derby bout between the Yokosuka Sushi Rollers and the visiting Okinawa Roller Dolls. starts at the bubble gym in Ikego.
If you have never seen a roller Derby bout, the combination of athleticism, determination, beauty, sportsmanship and campy burlesque uniforms and makeup of the female participants provides lots of great visuals. The Women are usually either local nationals, volunteer dependent wives or active duty military and they are a very active volunteer group in our community. They even have a junior league called the Sushi Pounders of local dependent family members under 18. The team visiting from other military communities gives this a wide appeal. Roller Derby and the Sushi Rollers are also becoming quite popular in the local Japanese community.
