SASEBO, Japan - Mine countermeasure ship USS Defender (MCM 2) is escorted by tugboats on its final departure from Sasebo Harbor. USS Chief (MCM 14) replaced Defender and is now part of the U.S. 7th Fleet forward-deployed naval forces (FDNF) in Sasebo, Japan. The hull swap was part of an overseas force structure change, which is part of the Navy’s long term strategy to rotate newer and more capable units to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility
