USO Celebrates Grand Opening of USO Yokosuka
Arlington, VA (PRWEB) December 06, 2012
Senior military leaders, USO Staff, volunteers, sailors and their families gathered today to celebrate the opening of the relocated and renovated USO Yokosuka. The new USO Center located at Yokosuka Naval Base, will serve more than 30,000 active-duty troops and their families annually through top-notch programs and services. The facility is located within the recently renovated Outdoor Recreation Center and will provide the USO a better opportunity to serve troops and their families.
“The opening of the new USO Yokosuka marks our continued commitment to the sailors and families of Yokosuka Naval Base,” said Alan Reyes, Senior Vice President of Operations for the USO. “We are thrilled to operate this new center at the heart of the naval base and adjacent to the piers where we can better provide the traditional USO comforts of home and allow for those separated by deployment to connect with their friends and family back home."
The move will place USO Yokosuka directly across from The Fleet, allowing greater accessibility to the family members that accompany active-duty service men and women. Amenities include a living room, family room, Warrior and Family Care Relaxation Room, movie theatre, message chairs, free WiFi and computers, a gaming center, phones and plenty of space to relax and enjoy snacks and other great USO programs.
"USO provides an important service and alternative to the Yokosuka community, especially to the single and unaccompanied Sailors. Being far away from loved ones is tough and the activities they offer gives these individuals a safe place to go right here on the installation. In particular, their holiday events such as free Thanksgiving lunch and Christmas morning breakfast are very popular and I greatly appreciate all that they do to ensure our Sailors are provided with such great options." CAPT David Owen, Commanding Officer, Fleet Activities Yokosuka.
Today’s event concluded with a ribbon-cutting and sneak-peak tours of the new center. The new USO Yokosuka was made possible thanks to many generous donors including: VFW Post 1054, Fleet Reserve Association – Branch 103, Stars & Stripes and U&A Advertising. USO Yokosuka will be open Monday-Sunday from 10am to 10pm.
