A Shirley Lanham base-wide community event
NAF, Atsugi, Japan, February 20, 2015– Students at Shirley Lanham Elementary School are hosting a base-wide CupCake War, Tuesday, April 28th, 2015. The event will include a student division for Lanham students in grades-3rd, 4th, 5th, & 6th and an adult division consisting of Atsugi’s U.S. and Japan commands. There are four categories: Best Unique Flavor; Best Decorated; Best Military Theme; Most Nutritional Master bakers from the NAF Atsugi Mess Hall will assist with judging.
“This event was developed out of a visual art unit that makes connections to learning, community, careers, and creativity.”-Nancy Jackson, Lanham Visual Arts Teacher
All non-winning cupcakes will be sold at 3:30pm, in the school gym, for one dollar, while division and grand champion cupcakes will be sold to the highest in an auction beginning at 5pm. All proceeds go to Shirley Lanham PTO to provide additional education resources for the students.
The CupCake War was inspired by the Food Network’s Cupcake War baking show and an art unit-“The Art of Food” developed by Nancy Jackson, a DoDEA visual art teacher. The unit featured dessert art by artist Wayne Thiebaud with connections to art, culture, STEAM and careers. STEAM is an educational initiative that promotes science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The first cupcake war in 2014 was an after school volunteer activity for 6th graders.
The event was so popular with the students that it has been expanded to a base-wide event.
