Sailor of the Week
NAVAL AIR FACILITY, Japan – Each week Naval Air Facility (NAF) Atsugi leadership recognizes one Sailor who has shown exemplary skill and work ethic within their shop and job field.
Personnel Specialist Seaman Apprentice Yadid Mendoza, of the Personnel Support Detachment (PSD), was among the newest to receive this honor.
“Mendoza has consistently exceeded expectations,” said PSD Officer in Charge Lt. Roy Klotzbach. “He has demonstrated true professionalism and is always searching for ways to improve the quality of service provided to all customers. He is an exceptional junior role model in the command.”
At work, Mendoza is directly responsible for all pay and personnel transactions for newly reporting personnel. He manages tasks such as checking in new Sailors and their families, preparing travel claims and managing various basic allowances.
“I like being busy all of the time,” said Mendoza. “With my job right now, I get bombarded with a lot of stuff and it definitely keeps me busy.”
When he’s not busy at work, Mendoza coaches youth basketball.
“I like kids,” he said. “Before, kids didn’t really like me, so I had to break that barrier. I started coaching and everything turned out fine.”
In his spare time, he can be found playing basketball, bowling, drawing or playing his guitar.
Along with being honored as Sailor of the Week, Mendoza was featured as a guest host for the base’s weekly show ‘Captain’s Call’ with NAF Atsugi’s
Commanding Officer Capt. Steven Wieman and Command Master Chief Carlton Duncan.
“His willingness to sacrifice off duty time to benefit the PSD team and accomplish the detachment’s mission is unquestionable,” said Klotzbach. “Mendoza is most worthy and deserving of the recognition as Sailor of the week.”
