Lt. Dan Band performs concert on board FLEACT Yokosuka
Gary Sinise, and the Lt. Dan Band, rocked Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka with a concert that helped celebrate America’s 237th birthday, July 5. This was their first ever visit to FLEACT, Yokosuka.
The concert was part of FLEACT Yokosuka’s fourth of July celebration co-sponsored by Morale, Welfare, and Recreation and USO Entertainment. The concert was the third stop in the band’s USO Japan/Okinawa Tour.
Sinise is an actor who is most noted for his role as Lt. Dan Taylor in the movie Forrest Gump (1994) and as Mac Taylor on the CSI, New York television series, which recently finished a nine-year run.
Sinise comes from a family of veterans; his father and uncle were in the Navy and both served during World War II, while his father-in-law was in the Army and served in Vietnam. He said he volunteered with the USO after the events of 9/11.
“Having been involved with veterans for so long, having them in my family, and having great respect for those who served, I just volunteered with the USO,” said Sinise. “I called the USO up and said, ‘What can I do to support our active duty folks?’”
According to Sinise, having a steady job on CSI: New York gave him the freedom to volunteer with the USO to serve the troops.
“We’ve asked a lot of our men and women in uniform,” Sinise said. “You should know that there are people grateful for the freedom that you provide, and that we don’t take the freedom that you provide for granted. We should be grateful for those who defend freedom around the world, and we should do what we can to pat you all on the back once in awhile.”
Sinise and his band played non-stop for a little more than two hours.
The songs they played covered pop, rock, soul, and country music genres from the 60’s to the present day.
They kicked of the show with “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire, and concluded with Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA”.
The fans in the audience were appreciative of Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band’s performance.
Cytological Technician Collection 2nd Class Jeremy Moss, stationed onboard the USS McCampbell (DDG 85) attended the concert wearing a Bubba Gump Shrimp Company hat.
“I thought it was great,” said Moss. “It was good to be able to see a live performance with such a variety of music. Also seeing Gary Sinise was pretty cool as well.”
Moss also said he wished he could have gotten his hat autographed, and he thought it was great that Sinise and his band travel worldwide to play for the troops.
