NAVAL AIR FACILITY, Japan – Sailor of the Week is a title granted to a different Sailor on board Naval Air Facility (NAF) Atsugi once a week who has shown exemplary skill and work ethic within their work center.

This week’s Sailor of the Week is Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Max Rivero of Strike Fighter Squadron 102(VFA-102).

Rivero hails from the Bronx, New York. He graduated from New Rochelle High School of Westchester County in 2002 before immediately joining the Navy thereafter.

“I wanted to try something different,” said Rivero.

Although attached to VFA-102, Rivero is currently performing temporary assigned duty (TAD) as a leading petty officer with Carrier Air Group (CAG) Automated Data Processing (ADP).

In this position, Rivero manages 17 people. He and his team are able to support the missions of all eight commands attached to Carrier Air Wing FIVE (CVW-5) through troubleshooting computer, network and machinery issues.

“My favorite part of my job is knowing that I helped make somebody’s day a lot better,” said Rivero. “I helped somebody else accomplish their job or their mission.”

Rivero gives support to over 2,000 users throughout CVW-5 and provides basic information technology training to ADP Officers in all eight commands between the ranks of O-1 to O-3, aiding in the accomplishment of their duties.

“Rivero is a technician that only comes along once every few years,” said Chief Yeoman Nick Le, Rivero’s leading chief petty officer. “He is 100 percent invested in the command’s goals and pursues them as his own. He knows the daily status of every program, project and evolution in CAG ADP. He seeks to have the answers before they are asked. He continually evaluates his own performance and strives to exceed every standard.”

During his down time, Rivero spends most of his time working out at the gym. On weekends, he likes to travel through Japan viewing the sights. The place he would really love to see, however, he cannot get to by car.

“I’ve been here for four years and I’ve yet to visit Australia,” said Rivero. “I would love to go to Australia. I don’t know what’s there, but I want to find out.”

Rivero is honored as Sailor of the Week by being the guest host of the base’s weekly Captain’s Call show with the NAF Atsugi’s Commanding Officer Capt. Steven Wieman and Command Master Chief Carlton Duncan.

“I actually want to thank my chain of command for the recognition and giving me the opportunity to be Sailor of the Week,” said Rivero. “It just motivates me to just keep moving forward.”
