Bringing families together: Yokota Middle School to host family event Nov. 9
At Yokota Middle School, families and autumn mean more than orange leaves and turkeys — it also means it’s time for Fall Family Night.
The annual event begins at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 9 on the school’s campus. Parents can come see works of their children, meet teachers, and have fun with the whole family. Fall Family Night includes dinner, crafts, and activities. Among the highlights of the evening are the YMS Advanced Band and Chorus Veteran’s Day performance and the YMS Parent Teacher Organizations’ silent auction. Attendees can bid on gift baskets to help raise money for school activities. The gift baskets are made from items donated by students.
“They auction baskets every year, and it’s become a school tradition,” said Beau Veazey, a Yokota Middle School teacher helping to organize the festivities.
Britainy Lewis, YMS’ band and chorus teacher, said the night’s festivities will open with the Yokota Base Color Guard at 5:30 p.m. and then move into the Veteran’s Day program. Among the pieces to be performed are “Armed Forces on Parade”, “Because of You” and “American Fantasy.”
Fall Family Night doesn’t only give students and parents time to bond with the school community, it’s also an opportunity for the school to get needed feedback from parents.
“We give out an exit ticket type of thing and a survey,” said YMS teacher Elizabeth Romano, who also is helping to organize festivities. “We need to know what parents think because their feedback is important, and we want to create an atmosphere where they know their voice is important.”
Activities will include an origami session, a scavenger hunt, a candy walk and more. Activities begin at 6:30 p.m. The school also will sell dinner plates, which will be served from 6-6:30 p.m. Plates cost $5 a piece and proceeds benefit the Yokota Middle School PTO.
All in all, it’s a fun family event to help bring the community together. The event provides parents with an opportunity to get to know their child’s teachers, and helps the teachers to get to know parents.
